Good Place with Erik & Philip

With Sweden getting a bit darker, we’re diving into the Good Place editorial to talk about friendship. Science says staying active and keeping up those social connections is a must for good mental health. So, UNNA founder John-Ruben Holtback caught up with Erik Corradini and Philip Ekman, two who love a bit of friendly nagging (you will understand soon enough!). Their good vibes always rub off on us! They share their favorite ways to stay positive and active during these chilly and dark months, plus a whole lot more.

Why did you start to run?

Erik:

I grew up playing football, and when I quit at 18, I celebrated with a few years of no workouts - especially running, which felt pointless without a ball. When Philip and I became colleagues and best friends, we realized we couldn't just drink beer every day. So, we started running last year and what began as a struggle quickly turned into a fun time. Also, for me it's the best brain medicine to avoid thinking myself into frenzy.

Philip:

Didn't we start two years back? Though, I guess we started a bit like three years back?

Erik:

Nah, I don't think I was running regularly before March 2023. Maybe a few sporadic 6-7k runs in 2022, but that's about it.

Philip:

Haha if you say so! For me it's amazing how running raises my energy level and focus and maked my mind go clear. I love doing it in the morning - it makes me feel ready for anything that is thrown at me during the day. Even Erik's constant nagging and overthinking.

Erik:

What... you know I just checked my Strava and I ran less than 10 times in 2021 and then not again until late July 2022.

When John-Ruben first met Erik, he was interviewing him for a uni essay on fashion. Since then, they’ve crossed paths a lot on Stockholm’s small fashion scene. Seeing Erik take up running now is such a joy. This guy’s already got plenty of energy, but like John-Ruben, he’s in it for the focus and peace of mind.

What's your Good Place

Erik:

There's so many. It could be a weekend beer with a friend, coming into the office, putting on a pot of coffee, and seeing the team. Or maybe it's perfectly executing a day of cleaning, laundry, a long run, then dinner and a shower before going to bed in fresh, clean sheets. At that point, you don't need anything—you're untouchable.

Philip:

A day filled with friends, sunshine, and good food, preferably including both the buzz of the city and the calmness of nature.

How does your social life influence your mental health?

Erik:

My social life is my mental health. It sounds plain, but just being with friends is everything. Some days, it feels like my only real interest outside work. They add color to everything I say, think and hope for - even when I mess up.

Philip:

Same here. I thrive off meeting people and the buzz of a crowd. But now, I'm finding a balance - adding movement and nature keeps me grounded.

Erik:

Exactly, it's all about keeping that balance.
